NaNoWriMo has begun!

Ever heard of National Novel Writing Month? It is this challenge thing where a bunch of people pledge to write a 50,000 word first draft in one month. I heard about it somehow in junior high and thought it sounded like crazy fun, but maybe a bit too heavy on the crazy side. That was pretty much the end of that. That is until I started blogging again a few months ago and heard the buzz of NaNoWriMo overtaking this side of the blogosphere.

How could I turn down this opportunity?
1. There is a huge community of people working at the same time. That means people to talk to, gather feedback from, and comiserate with! I love meeting people.

2. When else am I going to be taking a gap year? When will have the flexibility to rearrange my schedule for a month to include an insane amount of writing time? I may never be so free and flexible again in my life… woah. That was a scary statement. ANYWAYS – I figured I better take advantage of this opportunity.
Now I am super excited to be taking a short break from my historical fiction work to write a draft of a fantasy/fairytale I’ve been thinking about for a while.
Once upon a time, a very long time ago, in a land far far away, there was a small kingdom called Larkenland. It was a rich and beautiful land of hills and valleys flourishing with animals you’ve never heard of and sweet fruit in colors you cannot imagine. The land was inhabited by two very different people, Errors and the Markins, who lived in a constant state of bickering. There was no such thing as a Markin befriending an Error, or an Error befriending a Markin.
Markin and Error parents often whisper about these bickerings as they put their children to bed at night, finishing the evening off with the grand tale of how love brought peace to Larkenland. A young Markin prince named Yerodias married Adela the beautiful daughter of the Error king. Legend says that Yerodias and Adela ruled in harmony and everyone lived happily ever after.
Some would say,
“HA! That is just a story good for overly active children at bedtime!”
Ahh, this is true. But within every legend stands some truth. Sometimes it just turns out to be a bit more complicated than the bedtime story version…
I’m going to be posting what I write on figment and wattpad to try and get some feedback as I go. Feel free to check it out; I’d love to hear from you.
Also, if anyone is interested in a writing buddy, my NaNoWriMo name is
Weather Enthusiast. I can’t wait to start meeting people and helping each other on our path ways to 50,000 words!

I'm Susanna, a 20-year-old Christian girl incorrigibly addicted spontaneous adventures. My first dream was to become a pioneer. Unfortunately, I was born a couple centuries late, so I've decided to read, cook, run, and travel the world until my time machine is finished. You'll mostly likely find me getting into trouble and/or eating licorice. I am currently blogging the misadventures of a middle-school teacher in training. Come join me on my quest to become the next Ms. Frizzle!

  1. I'm SO happy you've decided to join in! Your story sounds really interesting and I'm looking forward to hearing more about it. Good luck and happy writing!

PS My NaNo name is egallaher.

  2. NaNo is great fun. I'd completely forgotten about it until November 1st when my sister challenged me to do it…I'm now 5,000 words into the most ridiculous story I've ever written! It sounds like you've planned your story a lot better than I have mine!

  3. Emily – Thanks so much. I'm pretty stoked. I can't wait to see how things turn out.

Lise – Thanks for your sweet comment. Wow, that is crazy! I actually didn't make the decision until a few days before. I pulled out an old outline that I wrote in early HS, perhaps even JH. I've got a bit to go on for a while, but at a certain point I'm going to be freestyling as well. Good luck!

  4. YAAAY! *flails like a pineapple* I'M SO GLAD YOU'RE DOING NANO TOO! I'm going to buddy you. x) I'm neck deep in it and having so much fun. I've never ever done it before, mostly for no reason…but I figured the community of people all writing at once is amazing and awesome and I just needed to be in on this. I'm having a great time!
