27 things to do while stuck at an airport

It is Wanderlust Wednesday on the blog. All who travel are sure to at one time or another find themselves stuck in an airport with nothing to do. I found myself in this situation in 2010 with my mom when we sat stranded at the San Francisco airport for nine hours after attempting to fly standby on Christmas weekend (smart idea children, very smaaaart idea). I wrote a list of things to do (all tried and true, mind you), and thought I might share it with you all:

  •  Watch as your plane flies away
  • Observe happy reunions in the international terminal
  • Watch unsuspecting victims on hidden cameras as they walk out of customs
  • Ride the monorail and try to go no hands with one foot in the air
  • Read a book in the bookstore
  • Try on all the reading/sunglasses in one of the shops
  • Calculate which escalator moves faster
  • Hang out in the international terminal and try to decipher which languages you hear
  • Lay out on the airport monorail and go around and around and around “…ZZZZZZ”
  • Run around in circles and see if anyone notices
  • Eat something special from the state/country you are in
  • Think of all the useful things you could/should be doing
  • Imagine the adventures people are about to embark upon
  • Write pointless lists
  • Pretend to be British
  • Take pictures of everything
  • Just sit down
  • Count the iPhone to non-iPhone ratio
  • Play spot the Apple Watch
  • Watch people fighting for plane seats
  • Go up the escalator…then back down again
  • Pick up your phone and talk talk talk to anyone who will listen
  • Observe the different ways that people walk
  • Chew lots of gum
  • Leave a bag unattended and let the police suspect that you have planted a bomb
  • Attempt to eat something crumbly
  • Smile

What do you do when you are stuck in an airport?

  1. 😄 This list would have been useful over the summer when my dad and I had a nine hour layover in Pennsylvania! I think mostly I just napped and drank enough water that I needed to get up and use the bathroom every once in a while. Also, I ate the worst Mexican food I've ever eaten while there. (Like seriously, it was a salad with a dead taco on top of it.)

  2. I wish I had this list a long time ago! Usually when my family goes to the airport and we're stuck there for more than six hours, we try to sleep. But then CNN blares on to the loudest volume at 2 in the morning, so instead, we go looking for food places to eat during that time of day and then read magazines in the bookshops. ^.^

    xoxo Morning

  3. This list is really hilarious, Susanna! It stinks to miss a flight – but there are very interesting things to do at an airport. Like People-Watching. Kinda creepy thing to do, but fun. 😉

  4. I hate delays or missed flights too. I agree that one of the nice things to do is watch happy reunions. On my last trip I saw an elderly couple waiting outside the terminal and all of a sudden a car pulled up and the whole family jumped out to give the a big hug. Love seeing those moments!
